Uterine Evaluation:How Invasive is it?

In addition to looking at your hormone levels, your fallopian tubes, and your partner’s sperm, evaluation of your uterus is crucial during a fertility assessment. You want to make sure that the place your baby will reside for 9 months is a fit environment.

First Steps 

The first test that can be performed is a sonohysterogram (saline ultrasound). Saline ultrasounds are performed to determine what is going on insidethe uterine cavity. A saline ultrasound can identify any abnormalities in the uterus that might interfere with implantation of an embryo or a pregnancy. Salines can assist in identifying abnormal growths, including uterine fibroids or polyps, endometrial lining irregularities, or scar tissue.

What Exactly Happens?

Another form of uterine evaluation is to look at the shape of the uterus to determine any uterine anomalies. This can be performed with a 3D trans vaginal ultrasound. The imaging can show abnormality in the uterine shape. It can help to identify septate, bicornuate, unicornuate, or arcuate uterine shape.

Do I need a Uterine Evaluation? 

If and when these abnormalities are identified, you may have the option to undergo a hysteroscopy, a surgery that looks inside your uterus. Your physician can perform a hysteroscopy to try to normalize your uterine shape and cavity. Not allof these anomalies can be corrected by surgery, but the identification of these issues can help determine best course of treatment.
